Gordon Wood was, by any rational measure, the most important living historian of early America. Sadly, he has passed at the age of 92, having been struck by a motor vehicle in Providence, Rhode Island.
He taught at Brown for four decades and remained active until the end of his life.
We will not see the likes of him again, and we are far the worse for his passing.
Rest in peace, Professor Wood.
